Overview

Edgio was a global edge-enabled software platform that emerged in June 2022 when Limelight Networks completed its acquisition of Verizon Media's Edgecast CDN business and rebranded the combined entity. The company offered an integrated suite of edge services spanning content delivery networking, web application and API protection (WAAP), edge compute, and over-the-top (OTT) video streaming solutions. Edgio positioned itself as a one-stop edge platform for media companies, publishers, and enterprises seeking low-latency content delivery, DDoS mitigation, and scalable video infrastructure — making it a notable infrastructure partner for AdTech publishers reliant on fast, secure content and ad delivery. At its peak, Edgio operated a substantial global CDN footprint with points of presence across six continents, serving major media and streaming customers. Its video platform, inherited from Edgecast and bolstered by Limelight's streaming heritage, supported live and on-demand video workflows critical to ad-supported streaming (AVOD/FAST) operators. The company also offered edge security products and a JavaScript-based edge delivery framework (EdgeJS) that allowed developers to customize request handling at the network edge, appealing to modern web publishers and e-commerce operators. Despite its broad product portfolio and global infrastructure, Edgio struggled financially following the merger integration. In September 2024, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Akamai Technologies subsequently acquired select Edgio assets through a court-supervised 363 asset sale in November 2024. Edgio ceased all operations on January 15, 2025, and the brand was retired. Its legacy lives on primarily through the assets and customer relationships absorbed into Akamai's platform.
