Limelight Networks was a publicly-traded content delivery network (CDN) provider founded in 2001, specializing in digital content delivery, video streaming, web acceleration, and edge computing services. The company built a global private network infrastructure designed to deliver high-quality digital experiences at scale, serving media companies, gaming publishers, software distributors, and enterprises across various industries. Limelight competed in the CDN market alongside providers like Akamai, Cloudflare, and Fastly, differentiating itself through its private network architecture and focus on video delivery optimization. In March 2022, Limelight Networks was acquired by Edgio (formerly Edgecast, owned by Edgio Inc.) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $300 million. Following the acquisition, Limelight's technology and services were integrated into Edgio's edge platform. The combined entity aimed to create a more comprehensive edge computing and content delivery solution. However, Edgio itself faced significant financial challenges and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, with its assets subsequently acquired by various parties, marking the end of Limelight Networks as a distinct operational entity.
