Was one of the world's largest independent media services groups prior to its acquisition by Dentsu in 2013, known for pioneering the independent media agency model.

Overview

Aegis Group was a London-headquartered global media communications and market research company that grew to become one of the world's largest independent media services groups. The company operated through two primary divisions: Aegis Media, which encompassed its network of media planning and buying agencies including the flagship Carat brand, and Synovate, its global market research arm. At its peak, Aegis Group employed tens of thousands of people across dozens of countries, serving major multinational advertisers with integrated media strategy, digital marketing, and consumer insight services. Founded as a spin-off from the Saatchi & Saatchi empire, Aegis Group built its reputation as a fiercely independent media specialist at a time when most media agencies were bundled within larger creative holding groups. Its Carat network was widely recognized as a pioneer of the independent media agency model, and the group expanded aggressively through acquisitions in digital, out-of-home, and research disciplines. Aegis Media also operated Vizeum, Isobar, iProspect, and Posterscope, giving it a broad footprint across digital performance, experiential, and specialist media channels. In 2013, Japanese advertising giant Dentsu completed its acquisition of Aegis Group in a deal valued at approximately £3.16 billion, one of the largest transactions in advertising industry history at the time. Following the acquisition, Dentsu rebranded its combined international operations as Dentsu Aegis Network, preserving the Aegis name as part of the new global network structure. The Aegis Group entity itself ceased to exist as an independent publicly traded company, with its brands and operations fully integrated into Dentsu's global structure. Dentsu Aegis Network was itself later rebranded as Dentsu International in 2021, marking the final disappearance of the Aegis name from the corporate landscape.
