Pioneer in mobile real-time face tracking and AR transformation technology, acquired and absorbed by Snap Inc. before establishing an independent market position

Looksery was a Odessa, Ukraine-based computer vision and augmented reality startup founded in 2013 that developed groundbreaking real-time face tracking and transformation technology for mobile devices. The company built sophisticated algorithms capable of detecting and mapping facial features in real time, enabling dynamic visual overlays and transformations on live video — a technically demanding feat on the mobile hardware of the era. Looksery initially offered its technology as a standalone app and SDK for third-party developers before attracting the attention of major platform players. In September 2015, Snap Inc. (then Snapchat) acquired Looksery for approximately $150 million, one of the largest acquisitions in Ukrainian tech history at the time. The deal brought Looksery's engineering team and core intellectual property directly into Snap's product development pipeline. Within months of the acquisition, Snapchat launched its now-iconic Lenses feature — animated, interactive face filters that could swap faces, add dog ears, or apply a wide range of real-time augmented reality effects — which became a defining product moment for the platform and drove massive user engagement. Following the acquisition, the Looksery brand was retired and the team was absorbed into Snap Inc.'s engineering organization, primarily operating out of a Snap office in Kyiv, Ukraine. The technology Looksery pioneered became central to Snap's competitive identity and helped establish augmented reality filters as a mainstream social media feature, influencing competitors including Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook to develop similar capabilities. Looksery's legacy endures through the billions of Lens interactions that occur on Snapchat daily.
