Refinitiv was a financial markets data and infrastructure provider that offered real-time and historical market data, trading platforms, risk analytics, and regulatory solutions to financial institutions worldwide. The company was formed in 2018 when Thomson Reuters sold a 55% stake in its Financial & Risk division to private equity firms Blackstone and others, creating Refinitiv as a standalone entity. In January 2021, London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) completed its acquisition of Refinitiv for $27 billion, integrating Refinitiv's data and analytics capabilities into LSEG's ecosystem. While Refinitiv operated as a major competitor to Bloomberg in the financial data and terminal market, it was not primarily an AdTech company. Its core business focused on providing financial professionals with market data feeds, trading infrastructure, risk management tools, and regulatory compliance solutions. The company served banks, asset managers, hedge funds, and other financial institutions with products like Eikon (its flagship desktop platform), FXall for foreign exchange trading, and Elektron for real-time data delivery. Following the LSEG acquisition, Refinitiv's products and services continue to operate under the London Stock Exchange Group umbrella, though the distinct Refinitiv brand has been gradually integrated into LSEG's broader data and analytics offerings. The acquisition significantly strengthened LSEG's position in financial data and analytics, combining Refinitiv's extensive data assets with LSEG's capital markets infrastructure.
